Everything You Think You Know About Culture Is Wrong!
Most leaders would agree culture is the most important thing in business, yet few can define what it is or explain how to create a healthy culture that blows by the competition.
Veteran business culture advisor Greg Cagle reveals exactly how culture gets created and the critical role leaders play in shaping it. Drawing on decades of in-the-trenches experience and leveraging real-world examples, he shares the 4 Dimensions of Culture that drive success across the 3 Core Functions of business that every leader faces.
Culture can become an organization’s secret weapon or an invisible burden. The good news is that when leaders learn to shape it, they can design and deploy a culture that employees are eager to promote and protect.
Prepare to think differently.
In the best cultures, leaders harness everyone’s strengths. They know their people, position them to succeed, and equip them to do their best work. As a result, those people become energized and engaged brand warriors who live and breathe the mission. They become idea factories who innovate and bring their best work to life. People know they are valued and give their best each day. These authentic cultures create a place for teams to flourish.
Culture is not just one important component but the critical component to business success. That’s not to say culture is one-size-fits-all. It is not about everyone following the same formula. People tend to think that way because it feels easier, but we’ve been looking at culture all wrong.
Culture is not as complicated as we might think when we see culture in 4 dimensions (4D):
Complacent
Compliant
Committed
Courageous
Every culture for every team or organization has the potential to exist in these four distinct dimensions. The Complacent Dimension is always negative and is to be avoided. Period.
The other three dimensions—Compliant, Committed, and Courageous—are all positive but are most powerful when mixed correctly.
When people are functioning in a healthy way in all three positive dimensions, look out! That’s when organizational greatness happens, the kind that makes a significant difference in the world. The kind they write about in the business history books.
Greg Cagle unpacks each of these dimensions in detail, showing leaders how to use this paradigm to unlock an organization’s full potential in any of the 3 Core Business Functions:
-
Executing Strategy
-
Navigating Adversity or Crisis
-
Capturing Opportunity
When an organization’s culture is healthy, it is poised to thrive in any of the three business functions and blow by the competition.
Culture shapes everything else and positions any organization to face whatever comes its way. And that’s why culture matters.
Now if only you could bring culture out of the fuzzy clouds and easily define what it really is and make it actionable. Well, good news: you can.

Warning! If you’re OK with living someone else’s dream or trying to cram yourself into everyone else’s expectations, this book is not for you.
But if you want to position yourself for greatness in life and business, start reading right now!
I will confess that I consider Greg to be a personal friend and I potentially have a bias….That said, I have read hundreds of books on self-improvement and leadership during my career and this one easily floats to the top. It’s full of insights and challenges conventional thinking. What else would you expect from a weird author? I have ordered multiple copies to share as I know it will be a much-appreciated gift.
Be Weird is a must-read … a compelling mix of head and heart that both inspires and challenges while providing practical tools on how to be the best version of you in leadership and in life. Greg ‘walks the talk’ and I admire his work enormously. Read the book, but more importantly, think about it and act on it.
I rarely write reviews, so to be writing this speaks volumes of my feelings about this book. I’ve already been broadcasting it to my family and friends that this is a MUST READ! It only took about two chapters before I realized this book was written for me, or maybe about me. At that point, I pretty much feel like the book was reading me instead of me reading the book!
So even if you think you don’t need this book, buy fifteen copies and give it to everyone in your life who does. At least they’ll be happy and more fulfilled, even if you’re not ready to do the same.
